어떤 사람이 우리에게 하나님은 어떤 분이냐고 묻는다면 우리는 어떻게 대답해야 할까요? 우리는  하나님에 대해 많은 것을 알고 있으나, 이렇게 물어 오는 사람에게 딱 부러지게 ‘하나님은 이런 분입니다’ 하고 한 마디로 대답하기가 쉽지 않습니다. 왜냐하면, 우리가 아는 하나님에 대한 어떤 것을 말하여도 틀리는 것은 아니지만, 또 온전하게 하나님을 설명하기는 부족하기 때문입니다. 우리가 어떤 사람에 대해 설명할때, 보통 그 사람의 특징을 말합니다. 하나님에 대하여도 마찬가지입니다. 하나님의 특성을 우리는 ‘하나님의 속성’이라고 말하며, 그분의 속성을 다 설명하기에는 한나절도 모자랄 것입니다.

오늘 말씀은 하나님께서 직접 자신이 어떤 분이라는 것을 설명한 말씀입니다. 이 말씀을 하나님께서는 십계명을 주실때 두번째  계명을 주시며 말씀하셨고(출 20:5-6), 시내산에서 이스라엘 백성이 금송아지를 만들어 배반한후, 모세가 다시 돌판을 받으러 시내산에 올라갔을때, 구름 가운데 강림하사, 모세에게 하나님이 직접 반포하신 말씀이며(출34:6-7), 민수기에서 이스라엘 백성이 범죄하자, 모세가 그들의 용서를 비는 기도에 (민14:18) 사용된 말씀입니다.  이 말씀은 하나님께서 이스라엘을 쓸어 버리고 싶을 정도로 큰 죄를 지었을 때마다, 중보자들(모세, 느혜미야, 시편, 요나, 요엘.)이 이 말씀을 인용하며 하나님게 기도한 하나님의 속성입니다. 

하나님은 사람을 창조하실때, 하나님과 바른 관계속에서 살아갈때에 사람답게 살수 있도록 사람을 지으셨습니다.아담의 타락이후 사람은 실수하고 자빠질수 밖에 없는 뒤틀린 존재가 되었지만,  하나님과 바른 관계안에 있는 사람은, 그럴때마다 회개를 통하여 다시 그 바른 관계속에 살려고 노력합니다. 하나님께서는 그런 사람에게 노하기를 더디하시고, 악과 과실과 죄를 용서하시며 천대까지 인자(steadfast love)를 베푸신다고 말씀하십니다.

부모의 죄가 자식들에게 영향을 미칠수 있음을 우리는 압니다. 그 연결고리를 끊어 내지 않는한, 삼사대까지만 보응하시는 하나님께 항의 할수 있는 사람은 없을것입니다. 그 죄를 씻게 하기 위하여  삼사대까지 쫓아다니시며 우리로 죄를 기억하게 하시고, 회개를 촉구하시는 하나님 사랑의 끈질긴 열심이십니다. 회개로 그 연결고리를 끊고, 하나님과 바른 관계안에 들어갈때, 하나님께서 처음 사람을 창조하실때 뜻 하신대로, 사람은 사람답게 사는 하나님의 축복된 삶을 살수 있습니다.

예수 그리스도는 그 벌을 우리대신 받으신 분입니다. 회개는 그 사실을 인정하고 믿으며 예수 그리스도를 주(Lord)로 받아들이고 의지하는 행위입니다. 이것이 하나님과 바른 관계로 들어가는 길입니다.

하나님은 어떤 분입니까? 하나님은 우리를 사람답게 살게 하시기 위하여, ‘자비롭고 은혜롭고 노하기를 더디하고 인자와 진실로 인자를 천대까지 베풀며 악과 과실과 죄를 용서하나 벌 받을 자는 결단코 면죄하지 않고 아비의 악을 자여손 삼 사대까지 보응’하시는 하나님이십니다.

Who is God?

Numbers 4:18 “The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, forgiving iniquity and transgression, but he will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, to the third and the fourth generation”.

How do we answer if someone asks us what kind of person God is? We know a lot about God, but it is not easy to answer the person who asks like this, exactly saying ‘God is such a person.’ For it is not wrong even though we say anything about God we know. But it may not enough to fully explain God. When we describe a person, we usually refer to that person’s character. God can be explained in the same way. We refer to God’s unique qualities as “God’s attributes,” and it would take more than a Full day to explain all of His attributes.

Today’s Words, Numbers 4:18, are God’s own personal explanation of what He is. When God gave the Ten Commandments, in the second commandment God described himself like this (Exodus 20:5-6). After the Israelites made a golden calf at Mount Sinai and betrayed God, Moses went back to Mount Sinai to receive the stone tablets. This is the word that the Lord descended in the cloud directly proclaimed to Moses at that time, (Ex. 34:6-7), and in Numbers, Moses prayed these words for the forgiveness of Israelites when they had sinned (Numbers 14:18). They are the attributes of God whom the intercessors (Moses, Nehemiah, ..) had prayed by quoting these words, whenever Israelites had committed such great sins that God had wanted to wipe out people of Israel. God has a lot of love, but I also think God is a severe person.

When God created man, He designed man so that a man can function best when he lives in a right relationship with God. After the sin of Adam, man becomes a disobedient who makes mistakes and fall. However, those who are in a right relationship with God try to live in the right relationship again and again, through repentance whenever they fall. For them, God himself says that the Lord is slow to anger merciful and gracious, forgives evil, negligence, and sin, and gives the steadfast love to thousands of generations.

We know that the sins of parents can affect their children. Unless we break the link of the effect, no one will be able to protest God who only judges up to three or four generations. I believe that when we break the connection of sin through repentance and enter into a right relationship with God, we will have the blessed life of God, living the life as God designed when he created the first man.

Who is God? In order to live the best life of man, “The Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation. The Lord is the God who loves.
