마태복음 19:26, “사람으로는 할 수 없으되 하나님으로서는 다 할 수 있느니라”

마태복음19:16에는 어떤 사람이 예수님께 나와 묻는 장면이 나옵니다. “선생님이여 내가 무슨 선한 일을 하여야 영생을 얻으리이까?”. 이 사람을 마태복음에서는 부자 청년이라고 했고(마19:22), 누가 복음에서는 부자 관원이라고 하고 있습니다 (눅18:18). 세복음서에 나오는 이 사람의 이야기를 서로 보완하여 생각해 본다면, 이 사람은 부자이고 관원이고 또한 젊은 사람입니다. 한마디로 가질것 다 갖은 사람입니다. 가질것 다 갖고 영생을 추구했던 사람이 옛날 중국에도 있었습니다. 진시황이었습니다. 진시황은 천하를 통일해 놓고 영원히 살고 싶어서, 서복이라는 사람에게 동남동녀 삼천명을 주며, 가서 불로초를 구해오라고 떠내보냅니다. ‘어떻게 하여야 영생을 얻을수 있나?’하는, 이 질문은우리 모두에게도, 지금은 아닐지라도, 궁극적으로 중요한 질문이 될수 있습니다. 이 세상에서 가질것 다 가져본 사람들만의 사치스런 질문만은 아닙니다. 빈부귀천을 막론하고, 죽음앞에 설때 모든 것을 희생해서라도 할수만 있다면, 모두가 얻기를 원하는 것이 생명의 연장일것입니다.

그에 대한 한가지 대답을 성경은, 에베소서 2:1-10에서 설명하고 있습니다. 재미있는 것은 바울은 그의 편지에서 이 모든 사실을 한 문장으로 쓰고 있다는 사실입니다. 긴 문장은 이해하기 쉽지 않습니다. 그러나 그 긴문장의 욧점은 8-9절에서 분명하게 요약되고 있습니다. “그 은혜를 인하여 믿음으로 말미암아 너희가  구원을 얻었나니 이것이 너희에게서 난 것이 아니요 하나님의 선물이라 행위에서 난 것이 아니니…”

우리가 무엇을 하여서가 아니라, 우리와 상관없이, 선물처럼, 하나님께 받는다는 것입니다. 그런데 여기서 우리가 놓치지 말아야 할, 욧점은 예수그리스도입니다. 은혜도 ‘예수그리스도안에 있는 하나님의 은혜’이고, 믿음도 ‘예수 그리스도를 믿는 믿음’을 통하여 입니다. 예수 그리스도가 왜 그렇게 중요합니까? 예수님은 우리의 죄를 대신하여 십자가에 돌아가셨고, 우리를 부활에 참여케하시기 위하여 부활의 첫 열매 (고전 15:23)가 되신 하나님이시기 때문입니다. 예수 그리스도가 있으시기에, 사람의 영생이 있는것이고, 예수 그리스도가 있으시기에 그를 믿는 사람은 그 믿음을 통하여 영생을 얻습니다.

그런데 출세한 부자 청년과 진시황은 엉뚱한 곳에서 영생을 찾고 있었습니다. 선한 일을 하여야 영생을 얻는줄 아는 청년에게 예수님은 ‘네 재물을 팔아 가난한 자들에게 나누어 주라’라고 하시자, 그는 포기하고 떠나버립니다. 그것을 보며 예수님은, “약대가 바늘귀로 들어가는 것이 부자가 하나님의 나라에 들어가는 것보다 쉬우니라” (마 19:24)고 말합니다. 이 말씀에 놀란 제자들이 묻습니다. “그런즉 누가 구원을 얻을 수 있으리이까?”  예수님은 말씀하십니다. “사람으로는 할 수 없으되 하나님으로서는 다 할 수 있느니라.”.

영생은 예수그리스도의 죽음과 부활을 믿는 믿음을 통하여 예수그리스도안에서 하나님의 은혜로 얻습니다. 이것이 사람으로써는 할수 없는 하나님께서 예수안에 있는 우리에게 주시는 영생입니다.

How do we get eternal life?

In Matthew 19:16, there is a scene where a person comes to Jesus and asks. “Teacher, what good thing must I do to gain eternal life?” This man is called a rich young man in Matthew (Matthew 19:22), and in Luke’s Gospel, he is called a rich ruler (Luke 18:18). So, we know that this man is a rich man, a ruler, and a young man. In a word, he is the man who has everything in the world. There was a person in China who had everything that man could have, and he also sought eternal life. He was the first emperor of China. Since the Emperor had unified the world, he wanted to live forever. He gave three thousand young women and men to the person, named Seobok, and sent them out to find ‘Bulocho’ which is thought of as an anti-aging herb. This question, ‘How can I get eternal life?’ can be an ultimately important question for all of us, if not now. It’s not just a luxury question for only the people who have everything in this world. Regardless of the rich or the poor, the prolonging of life is what everyone wants to gain, as long as they can do it at the expense of everything when they face death.

One answer to the question is explained in the Bible, Ephesians 2:1-10. Interestingly, Paul writes all of this in one sentence in his letter. Long sentences are not easy to understand. However, the point of the long sentence is clearly summarized in verses 8-9. “For by grace, you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works,.. ”

Eternal life is not gained as a reward for what we work. We just receive eternal life from God like a gift, regardless of our doing. However, the point that we should not miss is Jesus Christ. Grace is “God’s grace in Jesus Christ”, and faith is through “belief in Jesus Christ”. Why is Jesus Christ so important? It is because Jesus died on the cross for our sins and became the first fruit of the resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:23) to bring us into fellowship with the Father. Because of Jesus Christ, there is eternal life, and those who believe in Jesus Christ, because of Jesus Christ, receive eternal life through that faith.

However, the rich young man in the Bible and the ancient Chinese emperor were looking for eternal life in the wrong place. When Jesus tells a young man who thinks that he can gain eternal life only by doing good things, ‘sell all your possessions and give it to the poor’, he gives up eternal life and leaves. Jesus says to his disciples, “It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew 19:24). Amazed by this, the disciples ask. “Who can then be saved?” “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible,” Jesus answered.

Eternal life is obtained through the grace of God in Jesus Christ through faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is the eternal life that God gives us that cannot be done by any works of man.
