홈에퀴티론은 만기가 10년입니다. 이것도 분명히 값아야할 남의 돈이지만, 이자만 내면 된다는 마음에 부담없이 씁니다. 그런데 어느날 만기가 일년 남았다는 메일이 옵니다. “벌써 그렇게 되었어” 하는 생각은 들지만, “일 년이나 남았으니 슬슬 준비하지” 하는 느긋한 맘으로 또 잊어 먹습니다. 그랬더니, 또 어느날, 3 개월 남았다는 메일이 날아듭니다.  요원할것 같던 그날도 어김없이 다가옵니다. 약속된 날짜는 반듯이 다가 옵니다.

요엘서는 여호와의 날은 크고 두려운 종말의 심판과 (1:1-2:17), 하나님의  긍휼과(2:18-32) 은혜를 말하며 ‘여호와의 날’에 일어날 두가지 사건을 보여줍니다. 어떤 사람에게는 심판의 날이지만 어떤 사람에게는 구원의 날입니다. “팟종이가 남긴 것을 메뚜기가 먹고 메뚜기가 남긴 것을 늣이 먹고 늣이 남긴 것을 황충이 먹었도다” (1:4) 하며 완전한 파멸을 경고하지만, 또한 “그 날에 산들이 단 포도주를 떨어뜨릴 것이며 작은 산들이 젖을 흘릴 것이며 유다 모든 시내가 물을 흘릴 것이며 여호와의 전에서 샘이 흘러”(3:18)나오는 에덴동산같은 모습도 약속합니다. 이 일들이 마지막때, 여호와의 날에 일어날 일들에 대한 예언이고, 경고의 메세지이기도 합니다. 예루살렘과 유다와 열방이 하나 같이 타락한 죄악에 대한 경고입니다.

이 심판과 약속은 또한 우리의 힘으로 어찌할수 없는 일들임을 알게하고, 환란을 피하고 약속의 은혜를 얻기 위하여는 하나님의 도움이 절대적으로 필요하다는 것을 떠올리게 합니다. 요엘선지자는 그 방법과 그 방법이 왜 유효한 방법인지를 설명합니다. “너희는 옷을 찢지 말고 마음을 찢고 너희 하나님 여호와께로 돌아올지어다 그는 은혜로우시며 자비로우시며 노하기를 더디하시며 인애가 크시사 뜻을 돌이켜 재앙을 내리지 아니하시나니…”

둘 중에 하나 입니다. 마지막날 우리는 심판에 들든지, 약속을 받든지 (욜3:16) 결판나게 됩니다. 이 마지막 날에 대한 경고는 요엘선지자 뿐만 아니라, 예수님도 더 분명하게 말씀하십니다.  “인자가 자기 영광으로 모든 천사와 함께 올 때에 자기 영광의 보좌에 앉으리니” (마25:31) … “그들(죄인)은 영벌 (eternal punishment)에, 의인들은 영생(eternal life)에 들어가리라” (마25:46).

문제는 그날이(여호와의 날)이 언제 올것이냐 일것입니다. 분명한 한 날은 예수 그리스도께서 재림하시는 날입니다 (마 24:44, 살전 4:16). 이날은 산자에게나 죽은자에게나 일반으로 오는 마지막 날입니다. 또 한날은 우리 각각에게 오는 마지막날입니다. 우리가 마지막 숨을 쉬는 순간이 지나면 더이상 우리에게는 선택의 여지가 없습니다.

어떤 사람이 랍비를 찾아와 묻습니다. “랍비여, 사람이 언제 하나님을 믿는것이 제일 좋은 때입니까?” 이 사람은 마지막까지 죄를 지을 대로 지으며 마음대로 살다가 마지막 순간 하나님을 믿고 천국에 가고 싶어하는 사람이었습니다. 랍비가 대답합니다. “죽기 바로 직전이 제일 좋은 때입니다.” ‘자기 생각이 맞았다’는 것을 확인한 이사람은 만족 스럽게 돌아서는데, 자기가 언제 죽을지 모르고 있다는것을 깨닫습니다. 그는 다시 돌아와 묻습니다. “내가 언제 죽을지 모르는데, 그렇다면 언제가 하나님을 믿어야 할 제일 좋은 때입니까?” 랍비가 대답합니다. “그렇습니다. 당신이 지금 돌아 나가다가 죽을수도 있는데… 그렇다면, 지금이 당신이 하나님을 믿어야 할 제일 좋은 때 입니다.”

노아가 방주에 들어가던 날까지 사람들이 먹고 마시고 장가 들고 시집 가더니 홍수가 나서 그들을 다 멸망시켰으며, 또 롯의 때와 같으리니 사람들이 먹고 마시고 사고 팔고 심고 집을 짓더니 롯이 소돔에서 나가던 날에 하늘로부터 불과 유황이 비오듯 하여 그들을 멸망시켰느니라. 인자가 나타나는 날에도 이러하리라 (눅 17:27-30).

약속된 날짜는 반듯이 다가옵니다. 여호와의 날(주의 날)은 성경에 약속된 날짜입니다. 베드로 사도는, 요엘 선지자가 예언한 그 여호와의 날을 언급하며 다시한번 마지막 환난을 피할것을 권고합니다.  “누구든지 주의 이름을 부르는 자는 구원을 얻으리라”(행 2:21, 욜2:32) 아직 그날이 오기전에 준비하십시요. “너희는 여호와를 만날 만한 때에 찾으라 가까이 계실 때에 그를 부르라.” (사 55:6)

“And rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.”

Will “The Last Day” come?

Home equity loans have a maturity of 10 years. This is definitely someone else’s money, but I feel free to use it with the mind that I only have to pay interest. But one day, I got an email saying that the maturity was one year left. I think, “It’s already been so?” but I forget it again with a relaxed mind, “I have a year left, so I have enough time to prepare.” Then, another day, another e-mail came, saying that three months were left to the maturity date. The day that seemed to be eternal comes without fail. The promised date is coming.

The book of Joel tells that the “Jehovah’s Day,” means both the great and terrifying judgment of God at the end (1:1-2:17) and the mercy and grace of God (2:18-32). It is the Day of Judgment for some, but the day of salvation for others. “What the cutting locust left, the swarming locust has eaten. What the swarming locust left, the hopping locust has eaten, and what the hopping locust left, the destroying locust has eaten.” (1:4) warns of complete destruction, but also “And in that day, the mountains shall drip sweet wine, and the hills shall flow with milk, and all the streambeds of Judah shall flow with water, and a fountain shall come forth from the house of the LORD” (3:18) seems to be a garden of Eden. These are things that will happen in the end times, on Jehovah’s Day, and they are also a warning message. It is a warning against the sins that Jerusalem, Judah, and the nations have fallen together.

The judgments and promises also remind us that God’s help is absolutely necessary to avoid tribulation and obtain the promised grace, letting us know that it is impossible to do on our own. The prophet Joel explains the method and why it works. “And rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.” It is one of the two. On the last day, whether we are judged or promised (Joe 3:16), we will be decided. The warning about the last day is not only made by the prophet Joel but also by Jesus. “When the Son of Man comes with all the angels in his own glory, he will sit on the throne of his own glory” (Matthew 25:31). “They (sinners) will enter eternal punishment, and the righteous will enter eternal life” (Matthew 25:46).

The question will be when will that day (Jehovah’s Day) come? One obvious day is the day of Jesus Christ’s Second Coming (Matthew 24:44, 1 Thessalonians 4:16). This is the last day to come both to the living and to the dead. Another day is the last day that comes to each of us. After the moment we take our last breath, we no longer have a choice.

A man visits the rabbi and asks. “Rabbi, when is the best time for a person to believe in God?” This man was a man who wanted to commit sins until the end and live as he pleased, then believed in God at the last moment and wanted to go to heaven. The rabbi answers. “Just before dying is the best time.” He confirms that he was the right one, and this man turns back satisfactorily, and he realizes that he doesn’t know when he will die. He comes back and asks. “I don’t know when I will die, so when is the best time to believe in God?” The rabbi answers. “That’s right. You could die even when you go back now… If so, now is the best time for you to believe in God.”

They were eating and drinking and marrying and being given in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Likewise, just as it was in the days of Lot—they were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building, but on the day when Lot went out from Sodom, fire, and sulfur rained from heaven and destroyed them all— so will it be on the day when the Son of Man is revealed (Luke 17:27-30). The promised date must come. Jehovah’s Day (Lord’s Day) is the date promised in the Bible. The Apostle Peter once again exhorted us to avoid the last tribulation, referring to the day of Jehovah prophesied by the prophet Joel. “Everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” (Acts 2:21, Joel 2:32) Prepare before the day comes yet. “Seek the LORD while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near.” (Isaiah 55:6)
