고린도후서 6:2 “보라 지금은 은혜 받을만한 때요, 보라 지금은 구원의 날이로다.”

옛날 전국시대 진나라에 상앙이란 사람이 있었습니다. 그는 사람들이 많이 모이는 시장 광장에 나무기둥을 하나 세워놓고 그 기둥을 그곳에서 그리 멀지 않은 북문으로 옮기는 사람에게는 금 열냥을 주겠노라고 했습니다. 사람들은 그가 그들을 놀리는 것이라고 생각하고 아무도 그 기둥을 옮기는 사람이 없었습니다. 그런 일같지 않은 일을 한다고 누가 그렇게 많은 돈, 금 열냥을 주겠느냐고 생각한 것입니다. 아무도 나서지 않자, 그는 돈을 올립니다. 금20냥, 금50냥을 준다고 해도 아무도 안 나섭니다. 금 백냥을 주겠다고 하자, 어떤 사람이 ‘믿져야 본전이지’ 하는 맘으로 그 기둥을 옮겼습니다. 그러나 상앙은 정말로 금 백냥을 주었고, 그는 횡재를 하게 됩니다.

모세가 이스라엘 백성을 이끌고 광야길을 갈때, 백성들이 하나님과 모세에 대해 불평하자, 하나님은 그들에게 불뱀을 보냅니다. 불뱀에 물려 죽어가는 백성들은 모세에게 기도하여 자기들을 구해 달라고 애원하고, 모세가 기도하자, 하나님은 모세에게 놋으로 불뱀을 만들어 장대에 달고, 사람들에게 일러, 그 뱀을 바라보면 낫겠으니 그 뱀을 바라보라고 했습니다. 그 뱀을 바라보고 낫은 사람들이 많이 있었지만, 말 같지도 않은 소리라고 믿지 않고 고개를 외로 돌린 사람들은 죽을수 밖에 없었습니다 (민21:4-9).

오늘 말씀은 이 사건에 대한 예수님의 성취입니다. 고린도 후서 5:10-6:2까지에서 사도 바울은 자신의 사역을 부정하는 고린도 사람들에게 자신의 사역을 다시 한번 설명하고, 이사야 49:8를 인용하여 자신의 사역을 결론맺고 있는 구절입니다.

예수 그리스도께서는 죄없는 분으로써(히 ) 모든 사람들의 죄를 대신 지고 돌아가셨습니다. 그 말인 즉은 모든 사람이 죄에 대하여 죽은 것이나 마찬가지 라는 것입니다. 돌아 가셨을뿐 아니라 예수그리스도께서는 하나님의 능력으로 다시 사십니다. 같은 공식으로 그리스도 안에 있는 모든 사람은 죄씻음 받은 새로운 사람으로 살수 있게 됩니다. 이 말이 그 유명한 성경 구절 고린도 후서 5장 17절 입니다. “그런즉 그리스도 예수 안에 있으면 새로운 피조물이라. 이전것은 지나갔으니, 보라 새것이 되었도다.” 죽음으로 죄값을 지불해야만 했던 사람은(창2:17) 이제 예수 그리스도 안에서 죄씻음 받은, 그래서 영생할수 있는 에덴 동산에 있던 아담과 이브같은 죄없는 사람이 되었다는 것입니다. 이 일을 하나님께서 “세상을 이처럼 사랑하사, 독생자를 주셨으니, 이그 저를 믿는 자마다 멸망치 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 …(요3:16)”하신 일이십니다. 즉 예수 그리스도 안에서 죄인들을 죄없게 하사(롬5: 6– 8; 고전. 15: 3; 갈. 3: 13) 하나님께서 그들과 화해하길 원하시는 것입니다. 그 화해의 메세지, 즉 복음을 세상에 알리고 모든 사람들에게 예수 그리스도안에 있게 하여 하나님과 화해시키는 일이 사도 바울이 위임받은 사명이라고 말합니다 (고후5:19). 즉 사도 바울은 고린도 사람들에게 그리스도 예수 안에서 당신들을 하나님과 화해케 하는 일을 하고 있다라는 것입니다. 이 복음은 죄인들인 사람이 당하여야 할 일을(롬6:23) 예수그리스도께서 다 하신것이고, 사람들은 그냥 예수 그리스도를 믿기만 하면 된다(행2:21, 롬10:13, 엘2:32)는 것입니다. 복음은 전적으로 하나님의 은혜고, 우리의 상식으로는 믿기지 않는 일입니다.

천국 가고 싶지 않은 사람있습니까? 예수 그리스도만 믿으면 천국갈수 있다고 하니까 믿지 않습니다. 왜냐하면 우리의 상식으로는 가당찮은 말이기 때문입니다. 그러나 갈수 있습니다. 은혜를 공짜로 생각한다면, 천국을 공짜로 가는 것입니다. 믿기만 하면 공짜로 어마 어마한 가치의 새 사람의 삶과 영생을 얻게 됩니다. “보라 지금은 은혜받을 만한 때요, 보라, 지금은 구원의 날이로다.” 하나님께서 오늘 우리에게 주신 축복의 메세지, 화해의 메세지, 복음입니다.

“기회가 왔을때 잡으십시요. 그것은 간단합니다. ‘No’ 라고 말하지 마십시요. ‘No’라고 말하는 것은 결코 어떤 결과도 가져올수 없습니다 (take a chance and go for it. It’s that simple! Don’t say, “No.” Saying, “No,” may result in “never,””* 어떤 분이 돌아가실 시간이 되자, 가족들이 부랴 부랴 목사님을 초대해 예수 그리스도의 이름으로 영접기도를 하고, “아멘 (믿습니다)”이라고 한 마디만 하라고 했답니다. 그러나 그분은 고개를 외로 꼬고 그 “아멘”이라는 한 마디를 끝내 안하고 돌아가셨다고 합니다. 하나님의 은혜는 받는 사람에겐 공짜입니다. 그러나 그 백만금이 넘는 공짜도 아무나 받지는 못하니 안타깝습니다.

2 Corinthians 6:2 “Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.”

Once upon a time, there was a man named Sang Ang in the Qin Dynasty. He set up a wooden pole in a crowded market square and said he would give ten golds to anyone who moves it to the north gate, not far from there. People thought he was making fun of them, and no one moved the pole. They wondered who would give so much money for doing something such trivial. When no one came forward, he rose up the reward. Even if he offered 20 golds, and then 50 golds, no one came forward. When he said that he would give a hundred golds, someone came forward, thinking that he may have nothing to lose, even though he doesn’t give me the money, and moved the pillar as he said. But Sang Ang really gave him a hundred golds, and he had a windfall.

When Moses led the Israelites through the wilderness, the people complained about God and Moses, and God sent fiery serpents to them. The people who were dying from being bitten by fiery serpents begged Moses to pray to God for their rescue. When Moses prayed, God told Moses to make a fiery serpent out of bronze and put it on a pole, and tell the people, “Look at the serpent on the pole, and you will be healed”. There were many people who looked at the serpent and got healed, but those who turned their heads away without believing Moses’ healing prescription had no choice but to die (Numbers 21:4-9).

Today’s verse is Jesus’ fulfillment of this event. In 2 Corinthians 5:10-6:2, the Apostle Paul once again explains his ministry to the Corinthians, who deny his ministry, and concludes his ministry by quoting Isaiah 49:8.

Jesus Christ died as a sinless person (Hebrews 4:15) to take the sins of all people. That is that everyone is dead to sin. Not only did he die, but Jesus Christ rose again by the power of God. By the same formula, all who are in Christ can live as new persons who have been washed away from their sins. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” Men who have to pay for their sins through death (Genesis 2:17) were now washed from their sins in Jesus Christ, and thus became sinless people like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, where they have eternal life. This is what God said, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life (John 3:16)”. That is, by making sinners innocent in Jesus Christ (Romans 5:6–8; 1 Corinthians 15:3; Gal. 3:13), God wants to be reconciled to them. The apostle Paul says that it is the message of reconciliation, that is, to make the gospel known to the world and to have everyone reconcile with God in Jesus Christ, which is entrusted to him by God (2 Corinthians 5:19). The apostle Paul is telling to the Corinthians that he is working to reconcile you to God in Christ Jesus. In this gospel, Jesus Christ did all that sinners had to confront (Romans 6:23), and people just need to believe in Jesus Christ (Acts 2:21, Romans 10:13, Joel 2:32).  The gospel is entirely the grace of God, which doesn’t make sense in our common sense.

Who doesn’t want to go to heaven? Someone does not believe God’s word that he can go to heaven if he only believes in Jesus Christ, because he just tries to understand it in his own common sense. But you can go. If you think grace is free, you are going to heaven for free. Just believe, and for free, you will get a newly life in this world and eternal life in the future. “Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” It is the message of blessing, the message of reconciliation, and the gospel that God has given us today.

“Take a chance and go for it. It’s that simple! Don’t say, “No.” Saying, “No,” may result in “never,””* When it was time for someone to die, the family hurriedly invited a pastor to pray in the name of Jesus Christ and asked the dying person to say only one word, “Amen (I believe).” But he shook his head and refused to say the simple word, “Amen.” It is said that he died without saying the word. God’s grace is free to those who receive it, but it is unfortunate that someone cannot receive that more valuable free gift than a million dollars.
