사사기 6:14 “여호와께서 그를 돌아보아 가라사대 너는 이 네 힘을 의지하고 가서 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구원하라 내가 너를 보낸 것이 아니냐 ?”

종종 믿는 사람들로 부터 이런 말을 들을때가 있습니다. 하나님을 믿으면 하나님께서 우리를 자녀삼아 주시고, 사랑하시며, 모든 환란과 고통으로 부터 지켜주신다고 하더니, 하나님을 믿는데도 왜 이렇게 우리의 삶은 어렵고, 하는일 마다 안되는것 같고, 고통과 환란으로 꽉 차 있습니까?  우리가 하나님을 믿는데, 어찌 이런일이 우리에게 일어납니까? 이 항변을 기드온은 하나님의 사자에게 하고 있습니다.

여호와의 천사가 기드온에게 나타나 ‘큰 용사’라 부르며 ‘여호와께서 너와 함께 계시다’라고 말을 걸어오자(삿6:12), 기드온은 조소적으로 불만을 토로합니다. “여호와께서 우리와 함께 계시면 어찌하여 이 모든 일이 우리에게 미쳤나이까? 또 우리 열조가 일찍 우리에게 이르기를 여호와께서 우리를 애굽에서 나오게 하신 것이 아니냐 한 그 모든 이적이 어디 있나이까? 이제 여호께서 우리를 버리사 미디안의 손에 붙이셨나이다.” (삿6:13). 기드온의 불만이나 오늘날 우리 믿는 사람들의 불만이나 별반 다르지 않습니다. 기드온은 하나님이 그의 백성을 위하여 하신일을 알고 있고, 하나님의 말씀을 누구보다 잘 알고 있으나 현실의 상태을 보면서 그 모든것이 거짓말이라는 것을 발견한 사람의 표본입니다. 성경의 이적과 말씀은 현실의 실제와는 아무 상관이 없다고 생각하고 있습니다.

이렇게 불만을 쏟아내는 기드온에게 하나님의 천사는 그 불평을 못 들은 척 말합니다. “너는 이 네 힘을 의지하고 가서 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구원하라. 내가 너를 보낸 것이 아니냐 ?” 여호와는 ‘내가 너의 삶에 일어나는 모든 어려움을 잠재우고, 너의 모든 고통을 없애주겠다’라고 말씀하지 않으십니다. 그 대신 여호와는 ‘너는 네 이 힘을 의지하고 가서’ 네가 하고, 해야할 일을 하라라고 하십니다. ‘네가 가진 능력으로 (in the strength you have (NIV)) 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구원하라고 하십니다. 당시 아무도 갖지 못했던 신형 무기를 주시는 것도 아니고, 바다를 가르던 모세에게 처럼 어떤 벼락을 내리는 능력을 주시는 것도 아니고, 단지 지금 네가 이미 가지고 있는 너의 능력으로 가서 이스라엘을 구원하라는 것입니다.

9장까지 이어지는 기드온의 이야기에서 하나님은 기드온에게 주시는 것은 “여호와가 너와 함께 하신다”는 사실만 일러주시지, 다른 특별한 능력이나, 무기나, 재물을 더해 주시지는 않습니다. 기드온이 사자에게 대접한 제물을 태우고, 양털을 말리고, 또 적시는 기적을 보여주시지만, 그것들이 기드온의 믿음을 더해 주기는 해도, 그의 전쟁에 어떤 보탬이 되는것도 아니고 그가 처한 상황을 바꿔 주시는 것도 아니었습니다. 오히려, 바알 신전을 부수라는 더 어려운 일을 주시고, 군대를 줄이고 또 줄여 300명으로 싸우라고 하십니다.

하나님이 기드온에게 주신것은 여호와 하나님께서 함께 하신다는 믿음뿐이었습니다. 그러나 그 믿음이 강해 졌을때, 그는 바알신전을 부수고 그 위에 번제를 드리는 일을 할수 있었고, 그 믿음이 견고해 졌을때, 하나님의 말씀을 따르는 지혜를 얻을수 있었고, 그 믿음이 확고해 졌을때, 하나님의 말씀에 순종하는 용기를 낼수 있었습니다. 그리고 그 흔들리지 않는 믿음으로, 하나님의 말씀대로 행동했을때, 그는 그가 하기를 원했던 일 (vision), 이스라엘을 미디안의 손에서 구원는 일을 할수 있었고, 이스라엘의 사사가 될수 있었습니다.

기독교는 하나님에 대한 믿음을 근간으로 합니다. 하나님의 백성에게는 살아계신 하나님에 대한 믿음이 모든 것을 좌우합니다. 기드온과 같은 불평을 하는 우리들에게 하나님은 말씀하십니다. “너는 이 네 힘을 의지하고 가서 네가 원하는 것을 하라 내가 너를 보낸 것이 아니냐”?  하나님께서는 우리 각각이 하시기를 원하는 것을 할수있는 각각의 능력과 힘을 처음 부터  주셨습니다. 그리고 믿음으로 하나님이 주신 능력과 힘(talent, gift)을 사용하기를 원하십니다.

하나님의 말씀인 성경을 통하여 기드온에게 보여주셨던 기적보다 더 많은 기적을 오늘 우리에게 보여 주시며 믿음을 북돋우시고, 기드온에게 주셨던 말씀보다 더 많은 말씀을 우리에게 해 주시며 용기를 주시고 계십니다. 오늘 우리에게는 기드온이 알지도 못했던 예수님이 계시고, 기드온에게 있었던 부라 (Purah, 함께 하는자 또는 돕는자)보다 더 우리를 잘아시며 우리를 돕고계신 성령님이 함께하고 계십니다. 우리의 믿음을 격려하고 있습니다.

그런즉 이 일에 대하여 우리가 무슨 말 하리요 만일 하나님이 우리를 위하시면 누가 우리를 대적하리요  자기 아들을 아끼지 아니하시고 우리 모든 사람을 위하여 내어주신 이가 어찌 그 아들과 함께 모든 것을 우리에게 은사로 주지 아니하시겠느뇨 (롬8:31-32). 기드온이 이스라엘을 구원하지 못하고 있었던 것은 그가 능력이 없어서가 아니었습니다. 그가 없었던 것은 믿음이었습니다. 오늘 우리가 하고 싶은것, 되고 싶은것이 되지 못하는 것은 능력이 없어서가 아닙니다. 없은 것은 믿음입니다.

마음속의 우상을 깨트리고 지금 일어나 문제와 맞서십시요. 하나님이 지혜를 주시고 필요한 모든 것을 주실것입니다.

Judges 6:14, “And the LORD turned to him and said, Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?”

If we are children of God, how does this happen to us?

We often hear this from believers. It is said that if we believe in God, God takes us as His children, loves us, and protects us from all tribulation and suffering. Why however is our life so difficult even though we believe in God? It seems that everything we do is not working, and our lives are full of pain and tribulation. We believe in God, how then such things happen to us? Gideon is protesting these to the messenger of God.

When the angel of the Lord appears to Gideon and calls him “a mighty warrior” and says, “The Lord is with you” (Judges 6:12), Gideon talks back to Him. “Pardon me, but if the Lord is with us, why has such disaster overtaken us? Where are all his miraculous deeds our ancestors told us about? They said, ‘Did the Lord not bring us up from Egypt’? But now the Lord has abandoned us and handed us over to Midian.” (Judges 6:13 NET). There is no difference between Gideon’s complaints from the complaints of believers today. Gideon is an example of a person who knows what God has done for his people and knows the word of God better than anyone, but looking at the reality, finds it is all lies. Some think that the miracles and words of the Bible have nothing to do with reality.

To Gideon who pours out his complaints like this, the angel of God seems to pretend he doesn’t hear the complaint and says, “Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian; do not I send you?” God does not say: ‘I will handle all the troubles in your life and take away all your pain.’ Instead, He says, ‘Go in your strength and do what you are supposed to do. ‘In the strength you have (NIV), deliver Israel from the hand of Midian. He is not giving him a new weapon that no one had at the time, nor is he giving him the power to send down any thunderbolts like Moses was splitting the sea, but just says, “Go and save Israel with your power that you have now”.

In the story of Gideon, which continues through chapter 9, God only reminds Gideon that “the Lord is with you”. He does not add any special powers, weapons, or wealth to him. Although God shows him the miracles of burning the food he prepared for the angel of God, drying and soaking of the fleece for Gideon’s robust faith in God, He does not add anything to change his situation. Rather, He commands him to destroy the temple of Baal which seems the extra difficult task he doesn’t need to do. And moreover, God tells him to reduce his army to 300 men from 32000 and fight with only that 300 men.

The only thing God gave Gideon was the belief that God was with him. When he was convinced that God was with him, he was able to break down the temple of Baal and make burnt offerings on it, gain wisdom to follow God’s Word, and have the courage to obey God’s Word. And when he acted according to God’s word, he could do what he wanted to do, deliver Israel from the hand of Midian, and become a judge of Israel.

Christianity is based on belief in God. For God’s people, faith in the living God determines everything. God says to those who complain like Gideon. “Go and do what you want in your strength, do I not send you?” God has given each of us the ability and strength from the beginning to do what He wants us to do. Through God’s Word, the Bible, He shows us today more miracles than He showed to Gideon and strengthens our faith than He did to Gideon. He gives us the courage and tells us more words than He gave to Gideon. Today, we have Jesus the Lord the very words and the very God whom Gideon did not know, and the Holy Spirit who knows us better and helps us better than Purah (sharer or helper) whom Gideon had (Judges 7:10).

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? (Romans 8:31-32). The reason Gideon had lived like a coward threshing wheat in a cave to keep it from the Midianites (Judges 6:11) was not that he was not a mighty man. What he lacked was faith. The reason we cannot become what we want to be or do today is not that we do not have the ability. What is missing is faith.

Break the idols in your heart and stand up and face the problems now. God will give you wisdom and give you everything you need. †
