사사기 21:25, “그 때에 이스라엘에 왕이 없으므로, 사람이 각각 그 소견에 옳은 대로 행하였더라”
오늘 말씀 사사기 21:25절은 사사기의 시대 상황를 잘 요약하고 있습니다. 이스라엘 백성을 이끌고 가나안 땅에 들어온 여호수아가 죽고, 그와 함께 했던 장로들, 곧 여호와께서 이스라엘을 위하여 행하신 모든 일을 아는 사람들이 죽은후 (여호수아 24:31, 삿2:7), 그 백성들은 여호와 하나님을 버리고 이방신들을 섬기고, 하나님을 믿는다해도 자기들 마음대로 믿는 불성실의 삶으로 바뀌게 됩니다.
그 타락의 뿌리는 여호와의 말씀을 청종치 않았다고 말합니다. 그리고 그 타락은 시간이 지날수록 심해집니다. 처음에는 백성들이 타락했습니다. 그러나 시간이 지나며, 지도자인 사사(Juges, 구원자)들 까지 타락합니다. 믿음의 용사라고 불리던 사사, 기드온이 타락합니다. 금을 모아 받아 에봇을 만들어 백성들이 에봇을 섬기는 일이 있게되고, 왕이 되기를 거부하지만, 실제적으로는 왕보다 더한 삶을 삽니다. 아들을 70명을 넘게 두었다면 그 삶이 어떻했을지 상상할수 있습니다. 그리고 그의 첩에 아들, 아비멜렉은 실제 왕이 됩니다. 입다는 길르앗이라는 유지와 기생사이에서 태어나는 사람입니다. 그는 하지 말았어도 되는 맹세를 하고, 이스라엘 사람으로써는 할수도 없는 자식을 번제로 드리는 일을 합니다. 삼손은 나실인(하나님께 구별된 사람)으로 태어납니다. 그러나 나실인으로써 이방여자에게 드나들고 포도주를 마시고, 삭도도 대지 말아야하는 나실인이 머리를 깍이고 눈이 빠지는 일까지 당합니다. 돈에 팔려, 만든 신상을 섬기는 레위인 제사장, 첩까지 두는 레위인과 남색을 탐하는 도덕적 타락에, 내전까지 치르는 이스라엘의 종교적, 도덕적, 사회적 타락을 사사기 마지막장 마지막절은 “그 때에 이스라엘에 왕이 없으므로, 사람이 각각 그 소견에 옳은 대로 행하였더라”라고 결론짓고 있습니다.
여기서 왕은 중의적인 의미를 갖습니다. 실제 왕이기도 하고, 또 하나님이기도 합니다. 앞으로 나타날 실제 왕 다윗을 바라는 내용입니다. 21:25절을 다시쓰면, ‘이스라엘에 왕이 있었으면, 사람들은 하나님 보시기에 옳은 일을 행하였을 것이다’입니다. 앞으로 나타날 왕정을 이론적으로 합리화하고 있습니다. 그런가 하면 더 큰 의미에서 천국의 왕 여호와 하나님을 의미하기도 합니다. 이스라엘에게 하나님은 종교적, 도덕적 사회적 가치관의 기준이 됩니다. 하나님의 말씀이 이방신들로 인해 그들의 삶속에 존재하지 않았을때, 그들은 각각 그 소견에 옳은대로 행할수 뿐이 없었습니다 (Everyone did what was right in his own eyes(ESV)). 기원전 12세기의 포스트 모던니즘입니다.
포스트모더니즘은 다원주의, 상대주의를 강조하고, 절대가치와 분명한 신념을 부정합니다. 그곳에는 모두가 인정할수 있는 객관적 진리는 없습니다. 어디에도 확실한 지식은 없습니다. 모든것을 회의(의심)합니다. 너도 옳고 나도 옳은 것을 관용으로 받아들입니다. 이런 사유(thinking)속에서 사람들은 신념체계를 골라 혼합(choose and mix)합니다. 좋아하는것을 받아들이고 싫어하는 것은 버립니다. 사람들은 자신의 진리를 자신이 선택합니다. 사회학자이며 철학자인 바우만은 이렇게 말합니다. ‘모더니즘 사회에서 사람들은 항상 옳은 보편적 진리를 찾고 있었습니다. 그러나 포스트모더니즘에서는 사람들은 자신이 속해있는 그시간, 그 장소에서 자신에게 유익한 신념이나 이론이나 진리를 찾습니다.’ 사사기 시대와 틀리지 않습니다. 자기 소견에 옳은대로 살아가는 시대입니다.
이것이 우리가 살고 있는 시대 상황입니다. 이런 시대에 사는 우리는 과연 하나님의 말씀, 절대 진리를 믿고, 그 진리를 우리의 가치관으로 받아들이며, 그 가치를 위해 살아가고 있습니까? 하나님은 이스라엘의 그런 타락가운데서도 하나님의 백성을 구원하려는 자신의 계획을 중단하지 않으셨습니다. 그들의 타락이 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 폐지시키지는 못하였습니다.
어거스틴은 말합니다. “나는 잘못을 저지른다. 그래서 나는 사람이다 (If I err, I am. / I err, therefore I am).” 사람에 대한 바른 평가입니다. 성경은 단언합니다. “의인은 없나니 하나도 없으며,” (롬 3:10). 사사기 시대를 살던 사람들이 그랬던 것처럼, 현대 포스트모더니즘 시대를 사는 우리도 타락한 인간입니다. 이스라엘에 왕이 있었으면, 하나님의 말씀대로 살수 있을것 처럼 말하지만, 이스라엘의 왕정(열왕기)은 포로로 끌려가며 막을 내립니다. 왕도 답은 아니었습니다. 그래서 우리는 왕(True God)이 필요합니다.
예수 그리스도는 하나님께서 우리를 구원하시려 포스트모던니즘의 시대를 사는 우리에게 보내신 왕 이십니다. 예수 그리스도 안에는, 우리 생각에 맞는 진리가 아니라, 하나님의 불변하는 절대 진리가 있습니다. 예수 그리스도의 복음이 그 진리입니다. 내 소견에 옳은 대로 사는것이 옳은 삶입니까? 타락이고 파멸입니다. 하나님의 말씀, 예수 그리스도안에서 진리와 새생명을 구하십시다. 그는 “세상에 있는 자기 사람들을 사랑하시되 끝까지 사랑하시” (요 13:1)는 분입니다.
Is what is right in our own eyes right?
Today’s Word, Judges 21:25, summarizes the situation of the times of Judges well. After Joshua, who had led the people of Israel into the land of Canaan, and the elders who were with him, who knew all that the Lord had done for Israel (Joshua 24:31, Judges 2:7), died, the people forsook God and served foreign gods, and even if they believed in God, their lives were changed to a life of unfaithfulness that they believe as they please.
The Bible says that the root of their corruption was they’re not heeding the word of Jehovah. And that corruption only got worse as time goes on. At first, the people were corrupt. However, as time passes, even the leaders, the judges (saviors), fell. The judge, Gideon, who was called the warrior of faith, fell. He collected gold and made an ephod, and the people served the ephod, and he refused to become a king, but in reality, he lived more than like a king. You can imagine what life would be like if he had more than 70 sons. And his concubine’s son, Abimelech, became the real king. Jephthah was the son of a prostitute and a leader named Gilead. He made oath that he shouldn’t have done, and he offered a burnt offering of his child, something an Israelite could not do. Samson was born a Nazarite (a man set apart to God). However, as a Nazirite, he went to foreign women, drank wine, and even though he should not have his hair cut, he was cut off his hair and even gouged out his eyes. The priesthood was sold for money and priest served manmade idols, and the Levites had even concubines, and there was the moral corruption of greed for sodomy, and even civil war. Whole Israel was corrupted religiously, morally, and socially. The last verse of the last chapter of Judges summarizes it, “In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”
Here the king has a double meaning. He is a real king, and he is also a God. The story points to the real King David who will appear in the future. Judges 21:25 can be rewritten, “If there was a king in Israel, people would have done what was right in the sight of God.” It is theoretically rationalizing the monarchy that will appear in the future. On the other hand, in a larger sense, it means the King of Heaven, God Jehovah. For Israel, God is the standard for religious, moral and social values. When the Word of God did not exist in their lives because of the foreign gods, everyone did what was right in his own eyes (ESV). It was the postmodernism of the 12th century BC.
Postmodernism emphasizes pluralism, skepticism, and relativism, and denies absolute values and certain beliefs. There is no objective truth that everyone can accept. There is no certain knowledge anywhere. People doubt everything and regard indifference as generosity. In this thinking, people choose and mix belief systems: accept what they like and reject what they don’t like. People choose their truth for themselves. Sociologist and philosopher, Baumann put it this way: ‘In modernist people were looking for theories that were always right: universal truths but in postmodernity people would find the belief, or theory, or truths that helped them at that time and in that place.’
This is the milieu of the times we live in. Do we, in the midst of postmodernism, really believe in the Word of God, the absolute truth, and accept that truth as our values and live for that value? Even in the midst of Israel’s fall, God did not stop His own plan for his people. Their fall could not abrogate God’s plan in love and grace.
Augustine says: “ If I err, I am (I err, therefore I am).” He said right of the nature of man. The Bible also says, “ None is righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10). Just like those who lived in the period of the Judges, we are fallen human beings living in the modern postmodern era. They said that if there was a king in Israel, they would be able to live according to God’s word, but Israel’s monarchy (1 & 2 Kings) came to an end as they were taken captive. The king was not the answer. So we need the King (True and living God). Jesus Christ is the King sent by God to us in the postmodern era to save us. In Jesus Christ, there is not the truth that fits our thoughts, but the unchanging truth of God. Jesus Christ is the truth. Is it the right to live what is right in our eyes? It is destruction and ruin. Seek the truth and new life in the Word of God, Jesus Christ. He is the one who loves his people to the end (John 13:1). †
